Corpus Inscriptionum Iudaeae / Palaestinae (CIIP)

(Cologne - Jerusalem - Tel Aviv)
Projektträger / funding: DFG

Projektbeschreibung / description of the project

The Corpus Inscriptionum Iudaeae/Palaestinae (CIIP) is developed in an international cooperation by a team of colleagues from the University of Cologne, the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, the University of Tel Aviv and the Bar Ilan University.

The CIIP is designed as a multilingual corpus including epigraphical testimonies from the historical regions of Iudaea/Palaestina spanning a time of round about a millenium – from Alexander the Great (4th c. B.C.) to the ending of Roman rule by the Arabic conquest of the territory (7th c. A.D.) – in more than 11 different languages found on the territory of the modern state of Israel. The CIIP is therefore meant to collect the inscriptions of the entire area not covered by the volumes of the Inscriptions Grecques et Latines de la Syrie and de la Jordanie.

By this approach new perspectives on the history, population, religion, culture and economy of the whole region are opened up for a multitude of scientific disciplines, but also for a wider, more general audience interested in the region and its history
